Kira Municipality Member of Parliament and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) Spokesperson, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, has expressed deep concern over what he described as a troubling political trajectory in Uganda, warning that the current environment poses serious risks to democratic governance and civil liberties.
Speaking on NBS Frontline on Thursday, Ssemujju said, “The turn the country has taken should worry everyone who loves Uganda.”
He highlighted the formation of the PFF, officially launched in June this year amid an increasingly restrictive political environment, and pointed to the continued detention of the party’s leader and four-time presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye, as evidence of politically motivated persecution.
“My party, PFF, was born this year in June. Our leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye, has spent the whole of this year and two months of last year in prison for political reasons,” Ssemujju said.
He also criticized the growing involvement of the military in civilian affairs, alleging that security forces are increasingly used to suppress dissent across different segments of society. “The military is arresting people from all walks of life,” he said.
On the ongoing electoral cycle, Ssemujju noted that much of 2025 has already been dominated by election-related activities, which he said have unfolded under tense and uneven conditions. “We have been in an election year. The biggest part of 2025 has been covered by elections,” he remarked.
Ssemujju’s comments add to ongoing public debate about governance, civil-military relations, and political freedoms in Uganda as the country heads toward the January 25th, 2026 elections.
